According to a new study, patients living with type 2 diabetes along with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) had better outcomes when they received optimal medical therapy and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). When these two treatment methods were combined, patients experienced improved stroke, myocardial infarction, and death rates.

This study was completed by physicians at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who call an optimal medical therapy-CABG combination the preferred management strategy for people living with both stable CAD and type 2 diabetes. The second best approach is thought to be optimal medical therapy alone, but if this method does not improve quality of life, , (PCI) Percutaneous coronary intervention plus medication may be an appropriate alternative.

These findings were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology on August 30, 2016.
