Diabetes Health in the News Podcast: CMS Offers New Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Model

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering a new accountable care organization model known as Next Gen that will address the shortcomings of the Medicare Shared Shavings Programs. These new models will allow participants to keep 80%-100% of savings, and patients will be assigned to a plan at the beginning of the plan year. Additionally, the model offers incentives for beneficiaries to remain within the ACO care network.

CMS is only offering new admissions into Next Gen this spring, and the program will begin on January 1, 2017. ACOs that would like to participate need to apply by May 25, 2016. After this window closes, a similar model will not likely be available again until at least 2020.

These findings were published in the Health Affairs Blog on April 15, 2016.
