Researchers have long believed that pre-menopausal women with type 2 may lose the protection against cardiovascular disease provided by estrogens to non-diabetic women.
A new British study notes that no differences in women with diabetes were observed between the pre- and post-menopausal groups in measures of triglycerides and fatty acids. Though the meal challenge study included only eight patients, the researchers found that the usual premenopausal advantage in clearing dietary lipids is not seen in the premenopausal diabetic women.
The researchers conclude that the defect in clearing dietary lipids a more atherogenic lipid profile that may contribute to the loss of cardiovascular disease protection seen in women with diabetes.
