Type 2s Not Getting Enough Vitamin D

Italian researchers say that approximately three out of every five people with type 2 diabetes show signs of vitamin D deficiency.

Blood levels of vitamin D were studied in 459 individuals with type 2 diabetes and 459 nondiabetic controls. Vitamin D deficiency was higher in the diabetics than in the controls.

Food Sources of Vitamin D

  • Milk, nonfat, reduced fat and whole, vitamin D-fortified, 1 cup
  • Cod liver oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Salmon, cooked, 3½ ounces
  • Tuna, canned, packed in oil, 3 ounces
  • Sardines, canned, packed in oil, drained, 1¾ ounces
  • Ready-to-eat cereals fortified with 10% of the daily value for vitamin D, ¾ cup to 1 cup servings (servings vary according to brand)
  • Margarine, fortified, 1 tablespoon
  • Cheese, Swiss, 1 ounce
  • Egg, 1 whole (vitamin D is found in egg yolk)
  • Liver, beef, cooked, 3½ ounces
