America is fat now, but we'll be even fatter later. According to ameta-analysis of twenty studies and four national surveys, 75percent of us will be overweight, and 41 percent of those will bedownright obese, by the year 2015. Even our children, nearly aquarter of them, will be overweight or obese by then.

The meta-analysis, conducted by researchers from the Johns HopkinsBloomberg School of Public Health Center for Human Nutrition, foundthat full-on obesity increased from 13 percent to 32 percent betweenthe 1960s and 2004. By 2004, 66 percent of us were either overweightor obese. And we're not slowing down.

The authors of the meta-analysis looked at who was getting fatfastest, and they found that it's women between the ages of 20 and34. Eighty percent of African-American women aged forty and overare already overweight, and fifty percent of those are obese. Lesseducated people are more likely to be obese than others.

American Asians are less obese than other ethnic groups, butthey're still four times as likely to be fat as those born in Asia. And the Southeast is the most rotund region of the U.S.

The review authors noted that if nothing is done about ourcollective fattening, obesity could soon become the leadingpreventable cause of death in the United States.
