A Danish study shows that theatrophy of foot muscles is closelylinked to diabetic neuropathy.

Magnetic resonance images of thefoot were observed in 23 long-termdiabetic patients, 15 with andeight without chronic neuropathy.Images were also taken in 23 healthynondiabetic control subjects. Aneuropathy rank-sum score wascalculated for each patient.

Total volume of the foot muscleswas halved in neuropathic patientswhen compared to scores ofnonneuropathic and healthy patients.

Atrophy of foot muscles is closelyrelated to the severity of neuropathyand reflects motor dysfunction.
