Former NFL Star Sends Message of Encouragement and Hope

For nine years, Jay Leeuwenburg was a star offensive lineman in theNational Football League. He is now the subject of “Yes I Can! YesYou Can! Tackle Diabetes and Win” (ComServ Books, 2005).

Co-written by Leeuwenburg with Denny Dressman of the Rocky MountainNews, the book delivers a message of encouragement and hope to familiesdealing with juvenile diabetes. In addition to sharing Leeuwenburg’spersonal challenges with type 1 diabetes, “Yes I Can! Yes YouCan!” provides an entertaining account of his life as a collegeand professional football player.

Leeuwenburg was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 12. Whileattending the University of Colorado, he was voted All-American andplayed in back-to-back national championship games against Notre Dame inthe Orange Bowl. Between 1992 and 2000 he played for the Chicago Bears,Indianapolis Colts, Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins. Whileplaying, Leeuwenburg spoke to children and parents at hundreds ofeducational programs, provided tickets to NFL games for thousands ofchildren with diabetes and their families and produced a life-sizedposter with motivational and educational information about his owndiabetes management and football career.

Today, Leeuwenburg lives in Colorado with his family and teachesthird grade at the Colorado Academy.
