Mild to moderate consumption of alcohol isinversely and significantly associated with thefollowing components of the metabolic syndrome:Low HDL (good) cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, high waist circumference and high blood insulin levels, say Boston researchers.
Data from 8,125 participants from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES) were evaluated for the metabolic syndromeusing the National Cholesterol EducationProgram criteria, fasting insulin levels and alcoholconsumption.
White male and female participants and those whodrank beer and wine showed the greatest favorable effectfrom mild to moderate alcohol consumption.
