Researchers recently examined whether infections during childhood has an impact on metabolic issues later in life. A study completed at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Australia looked at whether children that were hospitalized with an infection, had any metabolic disorders as adults. There was a correlation between children with a higher BMI and a likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome.

Children that had more than one infection-related hospitalization had the greatest adult BMI increase. This  suggests that infections in childhood may contribute to pathways that lead to adult metabolic diseases.

These findings were published in Pediatrics magazine on August 12, 2015 .
