Being Overweight May Accelerate Type 1 Onset

By: J. Chanslor

Researchers in the United Kingdom studied whether increased body weight was also associated with earlier presentation of type 1 diabetes.

Ninety-four children aged one to sixteen and presenting for management of acute-onset type 1 diabetes were evaluated. The relationship between fatness and age at diagnosis was examined in a variety of contexts.

Results showed body mass index, weight change since birth and body mass 12 months later were all inversely related to age at presentation. Boys were significantly more overweight than girls and diabetes was present at a significantly younger age.
