Treating Your Feet

The most recent statistics say 86,000 people with diabetes suffer from lower-limb amputations. Experts, however, say that half of them could be avoided.

How? By educating doctors and their patients about how to better treat diabetes-related foot problems.

That’s why the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) decided to come out with an educational packet to teach educators how to better treat feet. Called “Feet Can Last a Lifetime,” the kit was produced as a joint effort between the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It includes a wealth of information for foot care, including:

  • Tips for diagnosing and treating different kinds of foot conditions.
  • Information on how to get Medicare coverage for shoes and other foot products.
  • Research that has been done on the topic.
  • Lists of resources for getting more information.

The foot-care kit is available at no cost. Order a copy by calling the NDEP at (800) 438-5383 or downloading a copy from their Web site at
