The Retinopathy Exam Routine: It’s Not Routine Yet

If you have diabetes, you know the drill: You're supposed to get an eye checkwith dilation every year. But fewer than half of you do it.

Why so few was thesubject of an analysis of 48 studies, comprising 160,000 participants worldwide,that looked at efforts to increase the number of patients who actually get theireyes examined.

The following interventions helped propel people to their eye exams: Increasingpatient and caregiver of diabetic retinopathy; improving access tohealthcare; using computer-based reminder systems; augmenting collaborationamong screening organizations; and developing a community-based healthcaresystem. Combining interventions together worked even better.
