The Cat in the Fat: They’re Getting Diabetes

A dense ten-page report in the Journal of Feline Medicine andSurgery, complete with pie graphs and complex tables, analyzed14,000 United Kingdom cats (all covered by health insurance, noless) to discover the following: If your cat looks like a bowlingball, it's three times more likely to get type 2 diabetes than yourskinny cat.

There's especially bad news for plump Burmese cats, which are almost four times more likely to get diabetes than plainold cats. Neutered cats, male cats, and particularly lazy femalecats are also at higher risk.

Worse still, the cat diabetes epidemic is growing just like thehuman one: The number of diabetic cats found in this study is almostfive times that found in an American study in the 1970s.

Want to save your fat cat from diabetes? Put it on aveterinarian-recommended diet and give it a daily workout. How tomake your cat exercise was not explained: maybe some time on alittle cat-sized treadmill would do the trick.
