Robert C. Atkins, the author of Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, has not been a stranger to controversy ever since his first book was published 20 years ago. He continues to be controversial in his advocacy of dietary supplements and minerals in his diet plan. Many doctors are leery of supplements because they have not undergone the rigorous approval process that the Food and Drug Administration puts prescription drugs through. Yet, Atkins puts as much weight on supplements as he does on prescription drugs.
For people with diabetes, Atkins recommends chromium, zinc, B-complex, Vitamin C, Coenzyme Q10, Vanadyl Sulfate, essential fatty acids GLA and EPA, Pyridoxine alpha ketoglutarate and Selenium.
Although it is not a supplement, Atkins also includes drugs called biguinides (an example is metformin or Glucophage) in his diet regimen because he is impressed by their ability to control blood sugars and lower insulin levels.
For carbohydrate cravings, Atkins recommends L-glutamine and glycerin-these would help until ketosis and lipolysis take over. Many people who use the Atkins diet claim that their appetite is diminished once ketosis sets in.
