In January 2005, the first implant of stem cells intothe pancreas through a small artery was performed on adiabetic patient.
The Team of Interventional Cardiologists of Clinic SanNicolás of San Nicolás’ City in Buenos Aires, Argentina,carried out this procedure. Drs. Roberto Fernández Vina, Oberdan Andrin and Francisco Vrsalovic led the surgery.
The surgery selectively implanted stem cells in thepancreas, with the hopes of regenerating this area ofthe organ and of promoting insulin production in thepatient.
Stems cells have never previously been implanted inthe pancreas in direct form through an artery, state theresearchers.
