Significant Jump in Number of People with HSAs and High Deductible Health Plans

According to a new survey by America’s Health Insurance Plans, the number of people who have selected a high deductible plan and health savings count has jumped. From 2016 and 2017, that number increased by 8%, with 21.8 million enrollees in January 2017.

HSAs allow enrollees to put pre-tax funds into a personal account. They are gaining in popularity as a way for people to better control and manage their out-of-pocket healthcare costs.

Policy actions are being considered to make these plans better meet consumer needs. Suggested improvements include increased contribution limits as well as allowing funds to be used for over-the-counter medication and wellness benefits.

These findings were published in America’s Health Insurance Plans on April 12, 2018.
