Taking cod liver oil during pregnancy reduces risk of type 1 diabetes in offspring, researchers say.
A report on the results of the study was published in the August 2000 issue of Diabetologia.
Conducted by researchers in Norway, the study examined the effects of cod liver oil or vitamin D supplements taken by 85 subjects with diabetes and 1,071 subjects without the disease. The mothers either took cod liver oil or vitamin D supplements during pregnancy, or took multivitamins during pregnancy and gave their infants cod liver oil and other vitamin D supplements during the first year of life.
Results revealed that the mothers who took cod liver oil during pregnancy reduced their children’s risk of developing type 1 diabetes. The children who took cod liver oil and vitamin D supplements in the first year of life and the mothers who only took multivitamins during pregnancy had a higher chance of getting diabetes.
Researchers conclude that either vitamin D or the fatty acids found in cod liver oil, or the combination of both, taken by mothers during pregnancy protects their children from developing type 1 diabetes.
