Nordstrom Will Donate Money for Type 2 Diabetes Tests for Hispanics

The Seattle-based Nordstrom department store chain will donate $5, up to $75,000 total, for each Diabetes Risk Test taken as part of the American Diabetes Association’s Hispanic Heritage Month through October 15, 2011.

Money from the Nordstrom contribution will help fund the ADA’s Ferias de Salud por Tu Familia (“Health Fairs for Your Family”) diabetes prevention and education program aimed at  Hispanics/Latinos.

Statistically, Hispanics run a higher risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic whites. (Other high-risk ethnic groups include African Americans, Asians, and Native Americans.)

The ADA has set up two test sites where people can measure their risk for type 2 and help spread the word about diabetes:

1.   Take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if you’re at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
2.   Spread the word and encourage your friends and family to take the Risk Test too.

The ADA has also set up a website en español (in Spanish) for test takers.
