There is a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes in women who consume alcohol. That was the finding of researchers in the Netherlands investigating the relationship between alcohol consumption and type 2 in older women.
Between 1993 and 1997, 16,330 women aged 49–70 years and free from diabetes were enrolled in a study and followed for 6.2 years. Over the course of the study, 760 cases of type 2 were documented.
“A linear inverse association between alcohol consumption and type 2 diabetes risk was observed, adjusting for potential confounders,” say the researchers. “Compared with abstainers, the hazard ratio for type 2 diabetes was 0.86 for women consuming 5 to 30 grams of alcohol per week, 0.66 for 30 to 70 grams per week, 0.91 for 70 to 140 grams per week, 0.64 for 140 to 210 grams per week and 0.69 for greater than 210 grams of alcohol per week.”
The researchers say that beverage type did not influence this association.
