White Blood Count and Blood Glucose Levels

An increase in white blood count (WBC), an indicator of inflammation, is associated with impaired glucose tolerance. Reduced insulin sensitivity, say researchers in Germany, can mostly explain this.

The statistical association between WBC and glucose tolerance, insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity was determined in nondiabetic individuals in this study.

WBC was positively correlated with body weight and blood glucose. WBC negatively correlated with insulin sensitivity. This was significant after adjusting for sex, age and body fat.

These study results support the theory that chronic subclinical inflammation is involved in the development of type 2 diabetes.
