Researchers Analyze Teenage Diets and the Risk of Type 1

Icelandic researchers who investigated the relation of food to the incidence of type 1 diabetes among adolescents from 11 European countries report some unexpected findings…

Among the 4,701 young people studied, diets high in total fat, in saturated fatty acids or in fruits and vegetables were associated with an increased incidence of type 1. The researchers also found an association between type 1 and consumption of animal products and cow’s milk (when Icelandic data was excluded from the analysis).

When fruit and vegetable intake were measured separately, no relation to type 1 incidence was noted. The study also reported no association between a high-sugar diet and the development of type 1.

The researchers urge further investigation of how fruits and vegetables fit into this picture, especially considering their well-established general health benefits.
