Hooray! Now We Have Billing Codes for Continuous Monitors

By: Linda von Wartburg

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved new Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS, known as “hickpicks”) codes for continuous glucose monitoring.

The agency created three hickpick codes, one each for subcutaneous disposable sensors, external transmitters, and receivers.

It’s an important step forward toward insurance reimbursement for CGMs, because HIPAA requires the codes for transactions involving healthcare. The codes are used to help physicians process medical records in an orderly and accurate manner.
