Glycemic Index On the Rise

Not everyone agrees that the Glycemic Index (GI) is the way to go when planning your carbohydrate intake. Despite that fact, nutrition expert Patti Geil, MS, RD, FADA, CDE, writes about the importance of the GI in the article “From Jelly Beans to Kidney Beans: What Diabetes Educators Should Know About the Glycemic Index.”

The article was published in the July/August issue of The Diabetes Educator, the magazine of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).

In it Geil cautiously advises educators to inform their patients with diabetes about the GI and tell them to consider using it for meal planning, according to a press release by the AADE. She says that people with diabetes may include both simple (sugary) and complex (starchy) carbohydrates in a healthy meal plan.
