Health Literacy’ Linked to Diabetes Complications

Health Literacy’ Linked to Diabetes Complications

Researchers are discussing yet another risk factor for diabetes-related complications: health literacy, defined as the measure of a person’s “ability to read, comprehend and act on medical instructions.”

Common among racial and ethnic minorities, elderly people and people with chronic conditions-particularly those who live in public housing-low health literacy contributes to higher A1Cs and to higher rates of retinopathy.

The researchers recommend a focus on efforts to develop and evaluate diabetes self-management, in order to improve outcomes among people who have inadequate health literacy.
