Did you know that the average American gains approximately 7 pounds between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s holiday?
In order to do this, one would have to eat the number of calories it takes to support current weight and then consume another 24,500 calories (3500 calories/pound x 7 pounds) over a 5 week period. This translates into an average of 700 extra calories per day over that 5 week period.
We have presented here a typical holiday meal that could load you with fat, calories, and sugar. Remember, this is just one meal of the holiday-many people also have turkey sandwiches later, too!
There is hope, however! Here are some simple tips for the holidays that you might consider:
- Build in exercise. Take the kids for a “nature walk” or play an active game inside (like hide-and-seek or “Twister”).
- Break with tradition – introduce new, healthier recipes, but do one or two at a time so people don’t feel overwhelmed with too many unfamiliar choices.
- Save calories for special holiday treats. For example, a roll with butter commands 220 calories and about 10 grams of fat. You could have a dinner roll anytime, so why not substitute 3 of Grandma’s special cookies for the same “cost”?
- Try substituting just one or two ingredients in each recipe that contribute too much fat or calories or sugar. This allows you to continue to have your favorites without the guilt.
