Diabetes Health in the News: Poor Health May Be Keeping U.S. Men Out of the Job Force

DAs of 2016, the United States has one of the lowest labor-participation rates among prime working-aged men living in developed countries, trailing only Italy. About 89% of men aged 25-54 are currently working or looking for work, compared to over 97% in 1957. Now, researchers may have attributed this trend to poor health.

Recent studies have identified several factors that could be affecting the health of the workforce, including chronic pain medication usage, obesity, diabetes, and alcoholism. These factors may make it difficult for men to obtain employment, especially those who did not attend college.

These findings were published by The Atlantic on March 22, 2017.
