A new study has examined how much sugar Americans are consuming, and results show that progress has been made in cutting back. On average, total consumption of caloric sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup and refined cane sugar is down 15% from 1999. Today, average consumption is 94 grams per day versus the 111 grams consumed in 1999. Still, that number is higher than the 87 grams consumed per day in 1970.

Researchers attribute much of the drop to a decline in soda consumption. Over the last several years, the high fructose corn syrup that is used to sweeten drinks like Mountain Dew and Sprite has been on the decline.

These findings were reported on WTOP-FM on September 20, 2016.
