Canadian researchers have recently found that continuous glucose monitoring can have a significant benefit on exercise motivation for people living with diabetes. The study was completed at the University of British Columbia, and participants were separated into two groups. The first group received general guidance on foot care and stress management, and the second group was given a continuous glucose monitor as well as counseling on self-monitoring and the importance of exercise.

At the end of the study, it was found that the group using the continuous glucose monitor was significantly more likely to stay committed to their exercise program. Many of the participants had even continued to exercise a month after the study. Since regular exercise is critical for people living with diabetes, it is important that clinicians consider the use of continuous glucose monitoring as a treatment option in the future.

These findings were published in Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics in May 2016.
