A new study suggests that women who eat a lot of potatoes pre-pregnancy could be more likely to develop gestational diabetes. This study was completed by the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Researchers found that a woman’s gestational diabetes risk increased by 27% if she had regularly eaten 2-4 cups of potatoes per week, prior to pregnancy. Eating five or more cups per week increased the risk by 50%.
The researchers stated that while potatoes are regarded as a vegetable, not all veggies are healthy. Potatoes are one such example and the more potatoes that a woman consumed prior to pregnancy, the more her gestational diabetes risk increased. However, this study only showed an association and was not designed to indicate a cause-and-effect.
