Diabetes Health in the News Podcast: Maine to Expand Medicaid

Earlier this month, the Maine Senate approved a measure to expand Medicaid. In a vote of 18-17, the bill would provide health insurance coverage to nearly 80,000 state residents. The measure would use federal government Medicaid funds to buy private health insurance for low-income Mainers.

These federal dollars have been set aside to cover low-income residents to improve health and reduce cancer risk. Additionally, the bill would create about 3,000 jobs in the state and would bring in more than $2 billion from the federal government. However, opponents argue that the cost of the program will only increase in future years, which could be a problem as the state continues to expand its level of debt.
