A recent report released by the CDC found that most Americans are eating too much salt each day. Health officials found that 89% of U.S. adults and more than 90% of children consume more salt each day than is recommended in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These new guidelines recommend no more than 2,300 mg of sodium each day for most adults.

Too much salt can be detrimental to our health. It can cause high blood pressure, which boosts the risk of stroke and heart disease. About 70 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, and about 800,000 Americans lose their lives to heart-related diseases each year. Reducing salt consumption could lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease.

These findings were published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on January 8, 2016.
