Co-Workers, Neighbors, and Families Form Teams to Raise Money to Fight Diabetes

To keep pace with the growing number of Americans with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) invites communities nationwide to their brand new fundraising walk, Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes. 

Step Out is a one-day walk that will be held in more than 200 cities this fall. With nearly 24 million Americans living with diabetes, ADA created Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes as an aggressive attack against the disease-and a cry of hope for those affected by it. Registration is open at

Step Out has more than 40,000 participants registered so far. Their goal is to have 100,000 people for 170 walks across the country.  Step Out’s fundraising goal is $20 million dollars.

A Local Example in Walnut Creek: Residents Make Every Step Count 

This year, 1,000 area residents will come together on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at Civic Park in Walnut Creek, California, to raise funds for Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes.  Formerly known as America’s Walk for Diabetes, Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is the fund-raising walk of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). All funds raised from Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes are used in support of the Association’s mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. 

“Diabetes is a devastating disease that touches us all,” said Traci Curtis, Wells Fargo Community Banking President for the East Bay.  “Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is such a wonderful way for friends and coworkers to come together and help raise money for a good cause.  The camaraderie and spirit that is enjoyed by participating in this event is priceless.”

GOAL: To raise funds in support of the American Diabetes Association’s mission:  To prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes.  To inform and educate our community about diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

DESCRIPTION: Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is the ADA’s signature fundraising event. It receives strong support from the business community, which comes together to provide sponsorships and corporate teams.  Participants register and recruit friends and coworkers to walk and raise money to support diabetes research, information, and advocacy.  The day of the event is a party to celebrate the participants’ fundraising accomplishments, as well as an opportunity to promote awareness about the prevention and cure of diabetes and the work of the American Diabetes Association.

PARTICIPANTS: Over 3,000 participants are expected.

HEALTHY LIVING FAIR: As part of the event, the Healthy Living Fair is designed to educate our community about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle in preventing or delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes.  We will also strive to inform those living with diabetes and the general community about products and services that can help manage their disease and/or promote a healthy lifestyle.
