BMI Linked to Meal Timing in People with Diabetes

According to a new study, people with type 2 diabetes who stay up late and delay breakfast in the morning have higher body mass. The study involved 210 non-shift workers in Thailand, all of whom had type 2 diabetes. The average BMI among participants was 28.4, which falls in the category of overweight.

Participants received a questionnaire that assessed morning/night preference, and focused on preferred wake and bed times, preferred exercise time, and preferred time of the day for mental activity. They found that participants were at an increased risk for high BMI if they had breakfast between 7:30AM and 8:30AM, compared to those who had breakfast between 7:00AM and 8:30AM. Despite this finding, more investigation is needed to determine if an earlier breakfast time might help with body weight among this population.

These findings were published in Diabetic Medicine on April 13, 2018.
