Athletes with Diabetes Can Win $5,000

By: Sharon Kellaher

The International Diabetic Athletes Association (IDAA) and LifeScan want to reward athletes who have diabetes with $5,000.

The 1999 LifeScan Award for Athletic Achievement will give three athetes with diabetes $5,000 to help with future athletic goals. The winners will be picked according to three criteria:

  • individual athletic accomplishments
  • individual potential for further success
  • potential for this grant to assist the athlete in his or her goals

The IDAA sponsors this contest to further its mission of improving the lives of people with diabetes through exercise.

To be considered, athletes must be IDAA members. A 250-word essay and two letters of support, one from a health care professional, must accompany the application.

Winners will be honored at the IDAA National Conference in Santa Cruz, California, May 7-9. Travel expenses will be provided.

For membership information or an application form, contact IDAA at (800) 898-4322 or idaa@diabetes-exercise.org.
