A Japanese study shows that elevated after-mealplasma fructose levels are linked toproliferative retinopathy in type 2 diabetics.
After-meal plasma fructose concentrationsand after-meal plasma glucoseconcentrations were simultaneouslymeasured in 38 type 2s. The average after-mealplasma fructose concentrations (MPPF)were calculated. Blood fructose levels weremeasured by gas chromatography-massspectrometry.
Patients were divided into the high, middleand low MPPF groups. The prevalence ofproliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)among the patients was significantly higherin the high-MPPF group than in the middle- andlow-MPPF groups.
No significant differences in blood glucoseindicators and average duration of diabeteswere observed among the three MPPFgroups.
