Possible Magnesium Deficiency in NIDDM

120

Magnesium appears to play a role in insulin resistance, carbohydrate intolerance, and hypertension. Is adequate magnesium is obtainable by following a nutritionally balanced mealplan?

Based on the results of a recent study of fifty people with non-insulin dependent diabetes, (NIDDM) the answer appears to be “no.” Eight weeks after nutritional instruction adhering to American Diabetes Association guidelines, only 20% of the total participants met the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for magnesium. The RDA is 350 mg of magnesium for men and 280 mg for women.
