Diabetes Health in the News: Providers May Be Challenged by Stage 3 Meaningful Use Requirements

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has finalized Stage 3 Meaningful Use requirements, which are slated to begin in 2018. While the program has over a year until it starts, stakeholders are arguing that it is too burdensome and demanding for providers to meet meaningful use success goals. Some of the greatest challenges are expected to be submittal of clinical quality measure reports to the CMS and relying on ONC-certified EHR systems to meet health information exchange requirements.

Meaningful use is currently just for hospitals, but those who want to begin using it in 2017 also need to use certified HER technology to engage 5% of caregivers or patients. For hospitals that want to implement the requirements in 2018, a 10% patient or caregiver engagement rate must be met.

These findings were published on…. EHR Intelligence on…. August 25, 2016.
