The bad news is that approximately 60 to70 percent of diabetic men over the ageof 50 have some degree of impotence. The good news is that clinical research hasclearly demonstrated that with good long-termglucose control and a healthy lifestyle, the disorder may be less severe or avoidedcompletely in many diabetic men.

There are many effective treatmentstrategies to increase a man’s ability toachieve an erection and to restore sexualrelations.

It is unfortunate that so many men areafraid to seek help, mainly because ofembarrassment or ignorance about theexcellent therapies now available. Onlya small percentage of the men with thisproblem have actually sought professional help.

Ten to 20 percent of erectile dysfunctioncases are reversible. These cases canbe caused by psychological problems, smoking, use of alcohol or a testosterone deficiency.

The remaining 80 to 90 percent of cases arenot reversible but still treatable. A few of thetreatment options available are given below.

A Couple’s Problem

Remember that erectile dysfunction is acouple’s disorder, and what you do about itbecomes much easier to accomplish if youand your partner have common goals. Seekqualified medical advice.

The doctor’s role is to determine the typeand cause of the dysfunction and to helpyou and your partner select an appropriateand effective treatment.

If your physician does not normally treaterectile dysfunction, ask him or her to referyou to a specialist, usually a urologist orendocrinologist. But act on the problem andbe assured that erectile dysfunction can besuccessfully treated.
