Eating peanuts and peanut products is agood dietary decision, according to PennState University researchers.
In a national study, a sample of 4,751 men,4,572 women, and 4,939 children wereevaluated for two days using food intakerecords to analyze differences in terms ofenergy and nutrient intakes between peoplewho eat peanuts and people who don’t.
“Peanut users, 24 percent of those surveyed,had higher intakes of protein, total fat,polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat,fiber, vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, calcium,magnesium, zinc and iron,” write theresearchers. “Dietary cholesterol of peanutusers was lower for all population groups.”
Despite caloric intake being “significantlyhigher” in all population groups of peoplewho ate peanuts, the average BMI was lowerfor all gender and age categories.
