"Spanish for Diabetes Educators" is a January, 2010 course arranged through Language Link, the U.S. Office for the Spanish Language Institute and the Multi-Cities chapter of the AADE (McAADE) in California. The course consists of a week of Spanish study (five days of classes) concentrated on your professional specialty.  You will have 30 contact classroom hours, as well as opportunities outside the classroom for professional use of your Spanish.  This course will qualify for continuing education units.

The course will take place in Cuernavaca, Mexico, from January 24 through 31, 2010. Enrollment is limited to the first 100 participants.

What's included and what it costs

The total cost (not including airfare) depends on your choice of accommodation. The price includes school registration, tuition for specialized classes, textbook, round trip airport transportation from Mexico City to Cuernavaca, full day Saturday excursion, salsa class, 7 nights in a hotel room, continental breakfast, school fiesta, and a professional event to be announced.

$895 Double room with individual beds, higher standard

$995 Private room

The hotel

Sunday, fly into Mexico City, where you will be transported by a private service to your lovely garden spa hotel, Posada Tlaltenango.  This hotel is one of the most exclusive hotels in Cuernavaca and features an Anti-Aging Spa.

Taxis to the institute from the hotel are readily available for about $1 per trip per person, based on three riding together.  It is about a 25-minute walk from the hotel to the school, for those wanting the exercise.

The schedule

9:00 orientation at the Spanish Language Institute, an outstanding Spanish school with a stellar reputation for professional programs and terrific teachers.

Every day:

9:00 - 12:00  You will be in a class limited to five students, all at the same level.  The Spanish taught will be general in order to provide or refine the basic concepts of the language.

12:00 - 3:00  You will be in classes specifically designed for diabetes educators, with emphasis on the vocabulary and structure needed in your field.  This time may include some professional field trips.

3:00  Taxi or walk back to your hotel for lunch on your own at the hotel or to the place of your choice.  Cuernavaca is a city filled with wonderful restaurants.

Free after 3:00 pm lunch for individual study or to explore Cuernavaca.  Or you can arrange one of the amazing treatments in the world class spa located in your hotel.

Dinner on your own

*Wednesday, the same as above, but with an optional excursion to the archaeological zone of Xochicalco and Hacienda Vista Hermosa (not included in total price).

*Thursday, the same as above, but at 3:00 there will be a school fiesta with mariachis, margaritas, and a piñata!)  After the party, you will have a salsa class so that you can hold your own in the numerous dance clubs of the city.

There is a possibility of making a connection with local diabetes professionals. This project may include using your Spanish skills to do screening among local residents or a presentation by a local physician who specializes in diabetes. This will be announced at a later date.

Saturday - Included all day excursion to Bazar Sábado in the Coyoacán area of Mexico City. This is a market that attracts the finest artisans from all over Mexico, and there is also an outdoor art exhibition with works for sale in an outdoor park. Following this, you will go to the Dolores Olmedo Museum, a beautiful museum situated in a palatial former home. There are many works of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, as well as a group of the rare and famous Xochitl dogs portrayed in pre-Columbian Aztec pottery. Next you will head to the floating gardens of Xochimilco, where you'll board a chinampa (raft type boat) to navigate ancient canals.

Sunday - you will be transported back to the Mexico City airport for your trip home.
