BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) is donating five million insulin syringes and pen needles to free clinics and health centers.

Finally, a Bailout of Millions for Folks Who Actually Need It!

Russell Phillips, PhD
Aug 18, 2009

The American Diabetes Association estimates that about 18 million Americans have diabetes. Given that millions of people have lost their jobs during the current recession, the law of averages would suggest that at least a few hundred thousand folks with diabetes are now unemployed.  Loss of a job, unfortunately, usually means a concurrent loss of health insurance.  For those hundreds of thousands of people with diabetes, no health insurance means big trouble.

Fortunately, a generous company by the name of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) is injecting a pretty massive dose of good news into this bleak picture. The company is donating five million insulin syringes and pen needles to free clinics and health centers. The supplies, which will be distributed by Direct Relief International, should really help out people with diabetes who have been swamped by the current economic downturn. Direct Relief is a privately supported nonprofit that provides healthcare professionals all over the world with needed medicines and products that they could not otherwise afford.

As Linda Tharby, president of BD Medical-Diabetes Care, noted in a press release, "To avoid the debilitating and costly complications of diabetes, patients must effectively manage their condition. Insulin injections often play a vital role in this daily effort, and BD believes that patients who have fallen on tough times should not forego this critical part of their treatment regimen."
