In a recent study, 81 youth with type 1 diabetes, aged eleven to sixteen years, were divided into two groups. One group received care as usual, but every member of the second group got six sessions with a "diabetes personal trainer," during which they talked about self-monitoring, goal setting, and problem solving.
Each trainer had received eighty hours of special training to prepare them to work with the youth.
Nine months later, the older children, between the ages of fourteen and sixteen, showed significantly lower A1c's if they'd received personal training than if they hadn't. And all the children who'd been in the training program were enthusiastic about it and wished it had continued.
