Walk To Work, and Walk Away From Diabetes

Vigorous exercise is a powerful preventive when it comes to type 2 diabetes, but what if the glow of perspiration isn't your best look? Happily for those of us who prefer strolling to straining, it appears that a leisurely walk to work is mighty effective as well.

A recent study followed 8,576 middle-aged Japanese men, all from similar sedentary backgrounds, who started out with normal blood sugar. Four years later, 878 of those men had developed type 2 diabetes. The men who had spent at least 21 minutes walking to work every day, however, were one-quarter less likely to have developed type 2 than those who walked for fewer than ten minutes. And the walks weren't speedy: the men arrived at work quite fresh and dapper.

The research is really piling up: If you can't run, walk briskly. If you can't walk briskly, then go for a civilized stroll. Even the mildest of exercise helps to stave off type 2 diabetes.

I park my car about a mile from work and walk the rest of the way. It seems to work for me as a way to get a bit more movement in my day.
