Previous research has found vitamin D deficiency to be associated with impaired beta cell functioning and insulin resistance, and it's been suggested that vitamin D reduces the risk of type 2.
Now researchers who followed 4,000 people for seventeen years have found that to be true. The subjects with highest levels of vitamin D had a forty percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those with the lowest levels. Vitamin D comes mainly from fish (and from sun exposure, which carries its own hazards).
