If you have diabetes, you know the drill: You're supposed to get an eye check with dilation every year. But fewer than half of you do it.
Why so few was the subject of an analysis of 48 studies, comprising 160,000 participants worldwide, that looked at efforts to increase the number of patients who actually get their eyes examined.
The following interventions helped propel people to their eye exams: Increasing patient and caregiver of diabetic retinopathy; improving access to healthcare; using computer-based reminder systems; augmenting collaboration among screening organizations; and developing a community-based healthcare system. Combining interventions together worked even better.

Actually, Kaiser Permanente does not cover annual dilated eye exams for people with Type 1 diabetes. Kaiser Permanente says that every other year or every third year is adequate. I have not had a dilated eye exam in at least three years as a result.
