In a recent study out of the University of California at Los Angeles, high blood levels of three cytokines, or messenger proteins, were found to be early markers that predicted the development of type 2 diabetes six years down the road.
The study measured levels of the three inflammatory cytokines in nearly six thousand healthy women. Six years later, 1,584 of the women had developed type 2 diabetes. A look back at their initial cytokine levels confirmed that initially higher levels of cytokines corresponded to a doubled or tripled risk of type 2.
The presence of the three cytokines - tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein - reflect low-grade chronic inflammation that may be present for years before a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. The researchers believe that because these cytokines are easily detected in the blood, they could serve as early warnings of impending diabetes before it's too late for preventive action.
