The Prosthetics Industry: Booming Because of Diabetes

Aug 18, 2007

An estimated five of every thousand people with diabetes will undergo an amputation, probably of their legs. And 1.5 million people are newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every year.

That's a lot of amputations, and they're causing the first boom ever in the prosthetics industry. Sales of prosthetics shot from $340 million in 1996 to nearly $600 million last year, and most of that increase can be laid at the door of diabetes.

As a result, the prosthetics industry is experiencing a labor crunch and may need twice as many workers within the next ten years. To forestall future shortages, Congress has given the prosthetics trade organization four million dollars to raise awareness of prosthetics work as a career choice.

Clearly, these are turbulent times in the world of prosthetics. Great strides, so to speak, have been made in the technology. In fact, a champion sprinter who runs on two prosthetic legs, Oscar Pistorius (nicknamed "Blade Runner"), is close to qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Oddly enough, there is controversy about whether his prosthetic legs give him an unfair advantage over able-bodied sprinters.
