Just a Few Simple Questions Can Predict Type 2 Diabetes in Middle Age
Are you obese? Did your parents have type 2 diabetes? Do you have symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol? Your answers to those few questions can predict your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
According to a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, more complex measures of glucose tolerance, fasting insulin, C-reactive protein, and insulin sensitivity don't add much of anything to what can be derived from those few simple questions. In fact, just the first two questions were found to be significantly predictive of type 2 diabetes.
From their research, the scientists created a model that uses the answers to the questions to predict the likelihood of type 2 diabetes. The model can be used in the context of a typical clinic visit because there is no need for more complicated input.
