Every hour that type 1 children spend watching cartoons, sitcoms, and even, alas, public television, correlates to an increase in A1c, according to a study published in Diabetes Care.
The researchers, who studied a total of 538 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, found that children who watched less than an hour daily had a mean A1c of 8.2 percent. From there, A1c's rose inexorably hour by hour; kids who watched four or more hours had an average A1c of 9.5 percent.
Oddly enough, there was no correlation between time spent on a personal computer and A1c's. Nonetheless, the moral of the story isn't to make your kids play World of Warcraft instead of watching Dancing With the Stars. Instead, unplug the TV and send those kids outside to play.
