A study recently published in Diabetes Care has found that people with type 1 who become happy pumpers share characteristics in common. They actively participate in self-care, have realistic expectations of pump performance, and clearly remember how they felt when they were first diagnosed. The researchers believe that these characteristics may help predict who will be a successful pumper.
From the thirty adults who participated in the study, five groups were formed based upon A1c’s: two groups with low A1c’s, one with mildly elevated A1c’s, and two with high A1c’s. As the groups talked, the researchers identified three themes: the impact of the pump upon their self-care; emotional reactions to the pump; and body image and social acceptance. Participants with the lowest A1c’s had several things in common. They approached their diabetes care more actively and considered the pump a tool rather than a panacea. Unlike the higher A1c group, they reacted to starting the pump with feelings similar to the emotions they felt when they were first diagnosed with diabetes. Finally, they felt that the pump helped them better accept their diabetes and be more open about it. People who didn’t do as well with the pump described more passive self-care and the belief that the pump should have fixed everything without a lot of work.
